  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Brazil international has repeatedly been targeted with racist abuse since joining Real Madrid in 2018 - something the winger is sick and tired of. Now, La Liga president Javier Tebas has reflected on the injustices the 24-year-old has endured; while insisting the league is becoming a more tolerant place and strides are taking place in rooting out the bad apples.

    WHAT JAVIER TEBAS SAID

He said via Mundo Deportivo: “Vinicius is a player who, by fighting against racism, has drawn the wrath of the enemy and we are keeping a close eye on him because he is a leader who has decided to have a clear stance against racism.

“There has been an important change in the stadiums, since the passive behaviour of the vast majority of spectators is now collaborative. People point out and report in the stadiums when they hear a racist insult.

"We can take action, do things, but the important thing is the metrics and knowing if I am reducing what I intend to and that is what we have to measure. We have made progress but we still have a long way to go because these behaviours continue to exist in the world of football."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Vinicius Jr got so weighed down by this ongoing issue that he broke down in tears ahead of a game for his country earlier this year. Spanish football still seems to have a lingering issue with racism among some fans but as many have stated, this - and all other kinds of abuse - has no place in the game.
