Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi, who is already assured of his standing among the all-time greats, stepped off the bench in that contest as his workload is managed ahead of a Copa America title defence. He did, however, play his part in a 1-0 win for the world champions.

Paez, at just 17 years of age, played the full 90 minutes and is now up to seven senior caps for his country. He is held in the highest regard, with the Independiente del Valle wonderkid having already been snapped up by Premier League giants Chelsea – with a move to England set to be completed when he turns 18 in May 2025.

Paez will have more useful experience under his belt by then, as he gets to compete with some of the very best in the business. He was able to win the Messi shirt-swap lottery after lining up against Argentina, as the Inter Miami superstar handed over his iconic No.10 jersey.

Messi will be among those keeping an eye on how Paez develops from this point, with plenty of exciting youngsters given big billings before struggling to unlock their full potential. Ecuador are, however, hoping that they have a possible global superstar on their hands.
