TH: Its salary cap rules! Stop messing about, MLS, and let actual money into your league. Yes, there's something to be said for smart roster construction, and using your funds properly. But if you want to make this a better product, with better - and more marketable - players, the cash has to flow. That's the only way Neymar comes, for example. Leagues Cup also could do with figuring out. As an idea, it's totally fine, but with the Club World Cup and U.S. Open Cup to consider - no one cares about the Gold Cup, generally - the competition needs some retooling.
JS: The Leagues Cup. It's become a tournament seemingly everyone is disconnected from, players and fans alike, and it's become a distraction. It stretches the campaign too long, and as a result, the offseason barely lasts a month for the MLS Cup participants. Either scratch it or revamp it.
RT: Pie in the sky here? Roster spending. We all know this discussion, but the league still needs to find ways to bring in the really-good-but-not-great players to fill out rosters. The good teams have found ways to do that, and the league has added new mechanisms to make roster building more flexible. Even so, especially with a Club World Cup coming up, building depth isn't easy. If there are ways to make that possible, that's the dream.
AL: Everyone wants MLS and its teams to spend more, which is fair, but the biggest problem is the lack of urgency shown, especially in the midseason slog. The quality of the playoffs and Deadline Day shows the league is closer than its critics would suggest. Also with a relatively short break from MLS Cup to spring training, the MLS doesn't give you a moment to just miss the league a little bit. There's no opportunity to enjoy the significance of the Galaxy did this year or let Miami marinate in its disappointment a bit longer. From an NFL perspective, want to know why there are Jets and Browns fans? Offseason allows you to forget the misery and dream about renewed hope. Right now, there's too quick of a turnaround. Whether it's making Leagues Cup shorter or trimming playoffs or regular season schedule to make it feel more consequential, this needs to be a priority.
