Ryan Reynolds 'apologised' to Paul Mullin for wanting him to star in Deadpool & Wolverine with Wrexham striker given 'royalty treatment' on Hollywood set

Players and coaches at SToK Racecourse have grown accustomed to life on camera, with an award-winning documentary series covering their every move. Mullin has figured alongside Hollywood superstar Reynolds in promotional videos for ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

He stepped a little further out of his comfort zone when joining the cast for the latest Deadpool movie, as he took on the role of Welshpool, but enjoyed an experience that offered him an insight into how Wrexham co-owners Reynolds and Rob McElhenney live their professional lives.

Mullin told Mirror Football: “Ryan asked me quite a while before we filmed if I wanted to be in the movie. He apologised that he wanted me to be in it. I'm pretty sure there wasn't an apology needed. It was something I was going to be over the moon to have the opportunity to do, and I'm eternally grateful for it.”

The prolific frontman added on being whisked away to a Hollywood set in the middle of an EFL campaign: “It was surreal when you see the set and things like that, but equally I didn't have time to hang about. We recorded it during the season in one day, so I wasn't allowed much time there. Ryan and all the crew made sure I was in and out as quickly as possible – I suppose I got the royalty treatment, as if I was Ryan Reynolds. It was over and done with really quickly, in a couple of hours. It was something I really enjoyed. I found it quite easy, and also refreshing. It was different. I loved it.”

Mullin admits to being bitten by the acting bug and said when asked who he would want to play him in a film about his life: “Me! I've got some experience now, so I think I could do it quite well. Going forward I could look into playing more [movie] roles. I'd love to. So why not? If I couldn’t pick myself then I'm not sure. I'd probably be a tough task to find someone who could do it – the Scouse accent, the things that I say, the things that have happened. So yeah, I'd like to play it myself.”

Ollie Palmer was another Wrexham star to feature in Deadpool & Wolverine, with Reynolds and McElhenney making a point of involving Red Dragons stars in as many of their projects as possible – although another promotion bid in League One remains the top priority for Phil Parkinson’s squad.
