Keep Gio Reyna in, but add Alejandro Zendejas: Who the USMNT should start against El Salvador

There will be changes, that's for sure. How many? Too soon to tell. But we do know that the U.S. men's national team that takes on El Salvador will look at least slightly different to the one that took on Grenada.

Not that they'll want to change too much, mind you, given the result of that Grenada game. A 7-1 shellacking of an overmatched team, although one that saw several USMNT stars step up with big performances.

El Salvador will be a different type of game, a much better team. They drew the U.S. 1-1 the last time these two teams met in June, with the U.S. needing a last-gasp equalizer from Jordan Morris to escape the Estadio Cuscatlan with a point. Hugo Perez, the former USMNT star and youth coach, has El Salvador playing ball. They'll be ready to play.

The U.S., though, know what they'll need: just a point. A draw will be enough to take them to the next round of the Nations League, where they'll look to defend their title. But who will get them there? What players can Anthony Hudson turn to to keep the good vibes going?

Does he start Christian Pulisic, who masterminded the 7-1 win? Does Gio Reyna get another run in midfield or does the U.S. revert to a more familiar shape? Will someone like Alejandro Zendejas or Taylor Booth make the leap into the XI after shining off the bench last time out?

Here's a look at who should start for the U.S. in Orlando on Monday night:

  • Matt Turner USMNT United States 2022 World CupGetty

    GK: Matt Turner

He barely had anything to do in the last one, but could be kept a bit busier by a much better El Salvador side. Games are important for Turner, who isn't starting regularly for Arsenal and could use all the minutes he can get.

Hudson could be tempted to go with Zack Steffen, who should eventually get a chance to push Turner for his old job, but this is a competitive game, so logic says to go with your No. 1 guy.

  • Antonee Robinson USMNT England World Cup 2022Getty Images

    LB: Antonee Robinson

The first of several changes. Joe Scally played a fine game at left-back last time out, but Robinson didn't come all the way out here to not play.

Robinson is very much still the guy at this position and that isn't going to change any time soon.

  • Tim Ream USMNT World Cup 2022Getty

    CB: Tim Ream

It made sense to not throw the USMNT's oldest player into the fray on a messy Grenada field, but we'll give Ream some time in this one.

On form, Ream may be the USMNT's best player at the moment and, against an El Salvador team that should provide a few challenging moments, unlike Grenada, Ream can certainly be counted on to provide some stability at the back.

  • Miles Robinson USMNT 2022Getty Images

    CB: Miles Robinson

Hudson said that the plan was to play Robinson one game during this international break, and this is obviously the game.

The USMNT are being cautious with Robinson, keeping on a one-game-per-week schedule alongside Atlanta United. Because of that, we likely won't see him against Mexico in April, and that's okay. When healthy, Robinson will likely be a go-to starter in meaningful games, so getting him fit and feeling good is vital.

  • Sergino Dest USMNT Netherlands World Cup 2022Getty Images

    RB: Sergino Dest

Bryan Reynolds put in a good performance against Grenada and, given his recent resurgence while on loan away from Roma, he definitely deserves some more looks. It seems like the former FC Dallas star is blossoming into the player many thought he would be while in MLS.

But still, this is a Dest game. He needs the game time and a bit of confidence, so let's give it to him against El Salvador.

  • CM: Yunus Musah

He came on as a substitute last game, so he should be well-rested for this one.

Musah is still far and away the best ball-progressor in the pool, although Luca de la Torre seems ready to give him a run for his money. De la Torre got his start on Friday, so we'll let Musah go on Monday alongside a familiar partner in midfield...

  • Weston McKennie celebrating USMNT 2022-23Getty Images

    CM: Weston McKennie

And here's that familiar partner. McKennie was as dangerous as ever on set-pieces against Grenada, although it was very, very clear that they were overmatched in every facet of the game. Still, you want McKennie being dangerous on dead-ball situations, simply because, in the international game, it's such an effective way of scoring goals.

While there are other midfielders in the squad, like, say, Johnny Cardoso, it makes more sense to just keep McKennie in the XI as one of the holdovers from Friday's win.

  • Gio Reyna 2022-23Getty

    CM: Gio Reyna

    Run it back.

Reyna was probably the most pedestrian member of the USMNT side in Grenada, but he should definitely get another look centrally in this one. Hudson said he was worried about protecting Reyna in the field conditions, but he'll have no such concerns in Orlando.

With his ability on the ball, Reyna should be able to unsettle the El Salvador defense. He can play better than he did against Grenada, although his lack of impact primarily came from the USMNT's success on the wing rather than centrally. Let's give Reyna another go in the middle and see what it looks like.

  • Christian Pulisic USMNT 2022 World CupGetty

    LW: Christian Pulisic

It actually would make some sense to rest Pulisic in this one, given his recent injury issues. You probably don't need to risk him in this one, to be honest.

But there's also something to be said about riding the hot hand and building his confidence. Pulisic was unstoppable against Grenada and, if he can do similar against El Salvador, he'll head back to Chelsea with a whole new lease of life.

So, for that reason, let's give Pulisic at least 60 minutes or so to see if he can go nuclear again before heading back to Stamford Bridge.

  • Daryl Dike United States USMNTGetty

    ST: Daryl Dike

Ricardo Pepi got his run, and now it's Dike's turn.

Pepi put in a good performance against Grenada, scoring two goals. If not for Christian Pulisic, he may have gotten Man of the Match honors for a solid performance in the final third.

But Dike also looked decent off the bench, even if he didn't get the goals. For this one, we'll flip flop the two, giving Dike the start and bringing Pepi off the bench a bit later on.

  • Taylor Booth Alex Zendejas USMNT 2022-23Getty Images

    RW: Alejandro Zendejas

He scores one goal against Grenada and probably could have gotten a few more. Hudson has said that he believes Zendejas can contribute with the A-team, so let's give him a chance to prove it.

Based on what we've seen, Hudson's claim is looking pretty good, as Zendejas looks like he could certainly push the World Cup attackers for their spots. It's still very, very early, though, so let's get Zendejas as many minutes as possible to see what he looks like when surrounded by the USMNT's best.
