    Reunion with Mosimane

The South Africa international is in his debut campaign with Al Ahly having joined the Egyptian football heavyweights from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion in August last year - reuniting with his compatriot and former coach at Mamelodi Sundowns, Pitso Mosimane.

The attacker nicknamed Lion of Judah had blossomed into one of South Africa's best talents in the PSL era under Mosimane's guidance - enjoying a lot of success together at Sundowns where they won six major trophies including the Caf Champions League title. The duo was hoping to continue where they had left off at Masandawana by winning trophies in North Africa.

The story of 2021-22 so far

The Lion of Judah announced his arrival in the North African country by grabbing a brace in his competitive debut as Al Ahly hammered Ismaily 4-0 in a domestic league game in October last year. The left-footed player continued his scoring form and at some point, he was topping the domestic league's scoring charts with five goals including a brace against Smouha in November last year. A month later, he grabbed a crucial late assist to help the Red Eagles clinch the Caf Super Cup. Unfortunately, Tau was ruled out of the Club World Cup at the beginning of the year after picking up an injury against the National Bank of Egypt in the Egyptian League Cup game.

Upon his return to action, the Witbank-born player struggled for form - enduring a five-match goal drought which included two matches against Sundowns in the Champions League before finally scoring against Al Merrikh of Sudan. The Lion of Judah hit form at the time for Al Ahly in the Champions League as he scored twice and provided four assists to inspire the Red Eagles to a 6-2 aggregate win over Algeria's ES Setif in the semi-finals. However, defending champions Al Ahly were humbled 2-0 by Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in the final. To date, Tau has scored eight goals and provided five assists from 26 games across all competitions.

    Any transfer rumours?

Mosimane's departure cast doubt on Tau's future with Al Ahly with the immensely talented attacker having been one of the accomplished coach's key players at the club. Mosimane had also pushed for the 10-time African champions to sign Tau from Brighton where he had fallen out of favour and Jingles is the one coach who was able to get the best out of 2017-18 PSL Footballer of the Season. The Lion of Judah is yet to be linked with a move away from the Red Eagles following Mosimane's departure having joined the club for an undisclosed fee which is reported to be around R30 million after putting pen to paper on a three-year contract with the option of a one-year extension.

Prior to joining Al Ahly, the Bafana Bafana vice-captain was linked with a return to Belgium where he played some of his best football. Royal Antwerp were reported to be keen to sign Tau, who had enjoyed successful loan stints at Union SG, Club Brugge and Anderlecht, but he ended up moving to Egypt. During his time in Belgium, Tau won the Proximus League Player of the Season award while playing for Union and he then helped Club Brugge win the Pro League title. It wouldn't come as a surprise if the 2017-18 PSL Golden Boot winner attracted interest from clubs in the Western European country at the end of the current Egyptian football season.

    One big hope for 2022/23

For Tau to prove that he can do it without Mosimane's guidance - that is if he stays at Ahly. It will be a chance for the former Witbank Spurs player to prove that he can succeed even without his good mentor and motivator at Africa's biggest football club.

    One big fear for 2022/23

Inconsistency. The left-footed player has blown hot and cold at the Cairo giants and this could cost him his place in the starting line-up under Al Ahly's future permanent head coach. He needs to regain the consistency he once showed in Belgium and in the PSL.

    GOAL’s prediction for 2022/23

Tau remains a top-class player who has succeeded in a foreign country like Belgium and he has shown in glimpses that he can be Al Ahly's talisman. The Lion of Judah can enjoy a successful campaign with Al Ahly and re-establish himself as one of the best players based in Africa if not the best if he puts his mind to it.
