Getty ImagesAlisson
The Brazil international is very much in vogue, with his reputation having soared during a 2017-18 campaign which saw him collect 17 clean sheets in Serie A – with only champions Juventus boasting a better defensive record than Roma. At just 25 years of age, Alisson is yet to reach his peak and would be a solid option for the present and future. Roma sporting director Monchi has claimed that he will only sanction a sale if he comes out of retirement and a “sack of money” is tabled. He may need to start clearing his desk and dusting off his gloves.
Getty ImagesGianluigi Donnarumma
A man with 125 appearances for Italian heavyweights AC Milan under his belt is still only 19 years of age. The winner of the Goal NxGn in 2017 and runner-up this year, Donnarumma boasts scary potential which appears destined to benefit somebody outside of San Siro. Super-agent Mino Raiola is in charge of his future and has hinted on a regular basis that a big-money move is in the pipeline. The Italy international, who is seen as the natural heir to the great Gianluigi Buffon by the man himself, would be a statement of intent at Anfield.
Getty ImagesJack Butland
If Liverpool opt to favour Premier League experience, then it may be that their search for a new goalkeeper leads them no further than Stoke. With the Potters having suffered relegation out of the top-flight in 2017-18, a cherry-picking of their top talent this summer is to be expected. Butland certainly falls into that category and may be offered a World Cup shop window in which to display his talent this summer after forming part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad. He has long been linked with Liverpool and has been talked up for a move by Reds legend Ray Clemence.
GettyJan Oblak
The Atletico Madrid star would not come cheap, but then who does in the current transfer market? The Slovenia international is reported to have a €100 million (£87m/$118m) release clause in his contract – a price tag that his current employers are hoping to raise with the agreeing of fresh terms. Oblak has admitted to being unsure as to what the future holds for him, as interest in his services builds, but Atletico are reluctant sellers and any suitor hoping to land a 25-year-old considered to be among the best in world will need to have deep pockets.
Gianluigi Buffon
If Liverpool harbour ambitions of bringing a modern day legend onto their books, then they may need to move fast. Goal revealed in the wake of the iconic goalkeeper’s announcement that he is to leave Juventus after 17 years that Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain have tabled a double your money offer. Talks have since been held, with Buffon seemingly not ready to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career just yet. At 40 years of age he would hardly be a signing with one eye on the future, but he would be a reliable option for the present.
GettyKevin Trapp
The Germany international is another custodian to have been linked with a move to Merseyside for some time. Transfer talk resurfaced during the January transfer window, with Trapp’s agent claiming at one stage that his client was looking for a route out of Paris Saint-Germain. The 27-year-old quickly quietened those rumours, but he does need to find regular football somewhere after slipping behind Alphonse Areola in the French capital. He is a proven performer at the very highest level and would arrive in England with relatively little risk factor involved.
Getty ImagesAlban Lafont
If Donnarumma proves a little too pricey for Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool board, then there is another 19-year-old talent who may be available at a more realistic price. Burkina Faso-born Lafont is a product of the academy system at Toulouse and – like a fellow teenager in Milan – has already taken in over 100 senior appearances. He kept 12 clean sheets during a difficult 2017-18 campaign which saw him come perilously close to suffering relegation. A play-off victory over Ajaccio means a man too good for second tier football will be performing among the elite somewhere next term.
GettyKoen Casteels
Liverpool’s last raid on the Bundesliga ranks may not have gone as planned, but that should not put them off. Casteels is a year older than Loris Karius and would arrive with considerably more top-flight experience under his belt. He could also provide an upgrade on the current Belgian keeping option at Anfield, with the 25-year-old a countryman of current Reds back-up Simon Mignolet. At 6ft 5in tall, Wolfsburg star Casteels is very much of the Thibaut Courtois mould and would offer a commanding presence between the sticks.
Getty ImagesKasper Schmeichel
Graeme Souness revealed in October 2017 that he passed up the opportunity to sign Peter Schmeichel while in charge of the Reds, with the Dane going on to become a legend at arch-rivals Manchester United. Klopp can ensure that lighting does not strike twice by bringing Schmeichel Jr onto his books this summer. Kasper, who is now 31 years of age and very much at his peak, is a Premier League title winner and could be lured away from Leicester by the promise of Champions League football.
GettyNick Pope
The former milkman and retail assistant at Next has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence which now sees him heading to World Cup 2018 as part of the England squad. The 26-year-old may also have a high-profile switch in the offing on the back of a breakthrough campaign at Burnley. Having made the most of an unfortunate injury to Clarets rival Tom Heaton, Pope made his first Premier League start against Liverpool in September 2017. The Reds fired in 35 efforts on goal that day, but found the target only once so need no reminding of a domestic rivals’ shot-stopping ability.
