Manchester United centre-half Maguire, who was stripped of the captaincy at Old Trafford ahead of the 2023-24 campaign, is selected once again despite seeing limited game time at club level. While questions can be asked of his claims to a place in Gareth Southgate’s thoughts, Jarrod Bowen has played his way back into favour with a collection of impressive performances at West Ham. The hard-working winger, who has scored five goals in seven Premier League appearances, is recalled alongside Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins – who has found the target on seven occasions this term in all competitions and has two hat-tricks to his name.

Southgate says the Gunners winger is still being “assessed” ahead of his potential involvement against Australia and Italy. Elsewhere, Trent Alexander-Arnold is selected as a midfielder – having recently filled a hybrid role at Liverpool – and Manchester City defender John Stones returns to the fold.

GettyChelsea forward Sterling has been a favourite of Southgate throughout his tenure, but he has now missed out in three successive squads – through a combination of injury and loss of form. Left-backs Ben Chilwell and Luke Shaw of Chelsea and Manchester United respectively are injury victims, while Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope remains behind Aaron Ramsdale in the pecking order despite the Arsenal shot-stopper losing his place at Emirates Stadium.
