Atletico Madrid most expensive sales - How Rojiblancos made over €1 billion in outgoing transfers

Atletico Madrid have become a force to be reckoned with in Spain again over the past decade or so and even managed to pip Real Madrid and Barcelona to the domestic title twice.

Their success is often being attributed to head coach Diego Simeone and the flamboyant Argentine certainly deserves a lot of credit for Atletico's resurgence.

Simeone's presence is by no means the only reason for their return to the top, though, as they have showed some shrewd business in the transfer market as well.

Buy cheap and sell high has very much been their mantra and they have made healthy profits on players such as Thomas Partey, Antoine Griezmann and Rodri to name just a few.

Who has been their most profitable piece of business over the last two decades or so, though?

    1Antoine Griezmann | €120m/£108m | Barcelona | 2019

Griezmann became Atletico Madrid's most-expensive sale when Barcelona came calling in 2019.

The France international was desperate for a new challenge and forced his way through to the Catalan giants, with Barca paying Griezmann's €120m (£108m) release clause.

The attacker failed to really establish himself at Camp Nou, though, and returned to Atletico on loan for two seasons in 2021.

The deal contained a €40m obligation to buy if Griezmann featured in a certain percentage of the playing time for which he was available, but Atletico had no intention of paying that fee and the forward featured for less than 30 minutes in the early stages of the 2022-23 season to prevent the obligatory buying clause from getting triggered.

Both sides eventually renegotiated a deal and Atletico would welcome Griezmann back on a permanent basis for €20m (£17.5m).
