Then there’s Joel Matip. Sidelined somewhat unjustly last term, as Jurgen Klopp opted to pair Joe Gomez and Van Dijk, could he step up in the Dutchman’s absence and reaffirm his importance to this Reds side?

Defeated finalists last time around, Paris Saint-Germain will surely be stronger for that experience, and will be boosted by the fact that they (finally) negotiated the knockout stages of the UCL…even if they couldn’t ultimately go the distance.
A series of promising arrivals—Rafinha, Alessandro Florenzi and Moise Kean—suggest that they may even be stronger than last term, while Senegal’s Gueye will be keen to build on his encouraging first season in the French capital.

He has started this season strongly—netting in the 6-1 demolition of Angers—but must prove he can hold his own against Europe’s biggest clubs this term.

Mahrez, too, has a point to prove this term.

Despite making progress for City last season, he was neutralised in the FA Cup semi-final defeat by Arsenal—when the Sky Blues needed his creativity to unpick the Gunners’ defence—and lost his place in the side for the meeting with OL.

Choupo-Moting is an unlikely arrival following the end of his contract at PSG, but it’s a deal that actually makes a lot of success.

The Cameroon forward is experienced, boasts technical quality, and, as he demonstrated against Atalanta last term, is still capable of deciding big European matches.

It’s been a superb turnaround for the attacker, who was relegated with Stoke City two years ago, and after being a defeated finalist last term, he now has the opportunity to go one better.
