Newcastle United most expensive signings - How Magpies spent over £1 billion on incoming transfers

Since being purchased by the PIF, Newcastle have been unafraid to splash the cash to dramatically improve a squad that had become threadbare under the stewardship of Mike Ashley.

The big-money deal for Alexander Isak during the 2022 summer transfer window was a serious display of wealth that marked the Magpies out as a serious global player.

The Sweden star's arrival came off the back of the signing of Bruno Guimaraes in the January 2022 window and the capture of Italy international Sandro Tonali in July 2023 was yet another example of Newcastle's desire to become a major force in the Premier League once more.

There's undoubtedly more to come from Newcastle, with the Magpies' Champions League qualification confirmation they're on the right track.

But who have been their biggest signings so far? Let's take a look!

Newcastle United's top 15 most expensive player signings

    15Allan Saint-Maximin | £16.20 million | OGC Nice | 2019

French winger Allan Saint-Maximin joined Newcastle United in the summer of 2019 and has been a revelation since. He cost Newcastle upwards of £16.20 million, which now looks like a bargain.

The attacker came to Tyneside after impressive performances in France and Germany, quickly settling into his groove, as he has made quite an impression in the Premier League with his wide range of qualities.

Quick on his feet, with great passing ability, Saint-Maximin often comes up with crucial goals for Newcastle United.

    14Florian Thauvin | £16.52 million | Marseille | 2015

Newcastle United signed Florian Thauvin in 2015 for £16.52 million and expectations were pretty high for the former Marseille winger.

However, the French attacker failed to establish himself at the club, resulting into him being loaned back to Marseille just seven months after arriving in England.

Another loan spell at the French club followed, before Marseille signed him back permanently for a cut-price of £9.90m.

After becoming a free agent in the summer of 2021, Thauvin moved to play for Tigres UANL in Mexico.

  • Aleksander Mitrovic Newcastle United PCMSGetty Images

    13Aleksandar Mitrovic | £16.65 million | RSC Anderlecht | 2015

Newcastle United desperately needed a striker as they headed into the summer of 2015 and they swooped for Serbian international Aleksandar Mitrovic from Belgian club Anderlecht.

Signed for £16.65 million, Mitrovic made 40 appearances for them in the Premier League, scoring 10 goals and assisting another four in the 40 games that he played for the club.

After a relatively quiet time at Newcastle, Mitrovic was sent to Fulham on loan in January, 2018 before being sold on a permanent transfer for £22.23m in the same year's summer transfer window.

Mitrovic turned out to be an excellent piece of business for Fulham as he's now gone on to score over 100 goals for The Cottagers.

  • Georginio Wijnaldum Newcastle United 06122015Getty Images

    12Georginio Wijnaldum | £18 million | PSV Eindhoven | 2015

Signed in the same season as Mitrovic, Georginio Wijnaldum arrived after impressing for Dutch club PSV.

Signed for £18 million in 2015, Wijnaldum enjoyed one incredible campaign with Newcastle, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists, before Liverpool came calling in the summer of 2016.

A move of such stature doesn't come around often, which made Wijnaldum eager to move to Liverpool.

Newcastle agreed to their player's wishes and the rest, as they say, is history.

  • albert luque newcastle united premier league 110206Getty Images

    11Albert Luque | £18 million | Deportivo La Coruna | 2005

In an attempt to strengthen their attack, Newcastle United paid £18 million for Albert Luque.

The Spanish winger made just 21 appearances for Newcastle in the Premier League over two seasons, scoring only one goal in 754 minutes of playing time.

Fair to say his move to England was a total disaster and Newcastle ended his nightmare when they agreed to let him go for just £7.20m.

Luque later featured for Ajax and Malaga before eventually retiring in 2011 at the age of 33.

  • Callum Wilson Newcastle 2022-23Getty

    10Callum Wilson | £20.03 million | Bournemouth | 2020

Newcastle United broke their transfer record when they swooped for Callum Wilson from Bournemouth in September 2020.

Bought for £20.03 million, Wilson has proved to be a decent addition as he hit double figures in his first season and has been a threat in attack in general.

Wilson has, however, struggled with injury issues from time to time.

  • Miguel Almiron, NewcastleGetty

    9Miguel Almiron | £21.60 million | Atlanta | 2018

Despite initial jokes from rival fans comparing him to the fictional character Santiago Munez from the movie Goal! when he arrived at Newcastle for £21.60 million, Miguel Almiron instantly proved to be a fan favourite at Tyneside.

Almiron has since then proved to be one of the most successful transfers from the MLS to the Premier League, amassing over 100 games for Newcastle and becoming an integral part of their rebuild under new ownership.

The attacker could prove to be a vital player for Newcastle as they chase Premier League and possibly, European glory in the years to come.

  • Michael Owen Newcastle UnitedGettyImages

    8Michael Owen | £22.50 million | Real Madrid | 2005

Newcastle United beat the likes of Liverpool and Everton to sign Michael Owen from Real Madrid in the summer of 2005 for £22.50 million.

With the 2006 World Cup on the horizon, Owen wanted to perform at his absolute best in order to get selected for the England national team, but tragedy struck when he broke his metatarsal.

He did recover in time for the World Cup, but an anterior cruciate ligament tear in his right knee ruled him out for almost the whole of his second season at Newcastle United.

Eventually, Owen declined and was part of the Newcastle side that ultimately got relegated from the Premier League.

  • Joe Willock Newcastle 2022-23Getty Images

    7Joe Willock | £26.46 million | Arsenal | 2021

Newcastle moved swiftly at the chance to swoop for Joe Willock from Arsenal when the youngster decided to leave the North London giants in 2021.

The midfielder had initially joined Newcastle on loan in 2020 and was their best player in the 2020-21 season.

Willock scored eight goals and played a crucial role in helping the Magpies avoid relegation.

He then informed Arsenal of his wish to secure a permanent move to Newcastle and they paid £26.46 million to sign him on a permanent contract in the 2021 summer transfer window.

  • Chris Wood - BurnleyGetty Images

    6Chris Wood | £27 million | Burnley | 2022

Newcastle United were alert in the January transfer window of 2022 as they parted ways with £27 million for the chance to sign Chris Wood from Burnley.

Wood had a proven track record of coming up with crucial moments for his teams leading to goals and making a move for Wood meant that Newcastle not only boosted their own options up top, but also significantly weakened their relegation rival Burnley by poaching their top striker.

  • Sven Botman Lille 2020-21Getty Images

    5Sven Botman | £33.30 million | Lille | 2022

Newcastle acted swiftly to secure their defensive target for the 2022-23 season as they swooped for Lille defender Sven Botman for £33.30 million.

Botman had joined Lille from Ajax for £7.2 million in 2020 and was widely regarded as one of the best centre-backs around in his age category at the time of the transfer, with Milan also having shown an interest in signing him.

The Netherlands international is strong in the air and a natural leader, traits Newcastle United desperately need on their way to the top.

  • Bruno Guimaraes, Newcastle 2021-22Getty

    4Bruno Guimaraes | £37.89 million | Lyon | 2022

The 2022 January transfer window saw Newcastle bring in Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon in what can be termed as their first big signing of their new era.

The former Lyon midfielder was in demand by a host of top European clubs, including Arsenal and Juventus.

Guimaraes was signed for £37.89 million, and is currently the third most expensive player in Newcastle United's history.

Since arriving at the club, he has settled in beautifully and looks to be the catalyst in what Eddie Howe is trying to build at the club.

  • Joelinton Newcastle Unitedtwitter/@nufc

    3Joelinton | £39.60 million | TSG Hoffenheim | 2019

After an incredible 2018-19 season with Hoffenheim that saw him provide 14 goal contributions for the club in Bundesliga, Brazilian attacking midfielder Joelinton joined Newcastle United in the 2019 summer transfer window.

They spent £39.60 million in securing his services, making him their most expensive transfer in the club's history at the time.

Joelinton struggled in his first two seasons at Newcastle United, before finding his best position in the team as an inside winger.

  • Sandro Tonali Milan 2022-23Getty Images

    2Sandro Tonali | £60 Million | AC Milan | 2023

Yet another sensible and shrewd signing. Indeed, when it comes to state-sponsored clubs and squad-building, Newcastle are pretty much the anti-PSG.

It is, of course, a sizeable fee, but Tonali is a 23-year-old Italy international coming off the best season of his club career to date, with the all-action midfielder playing a pivotal role in AC Milan's run to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

He has both the character and quality to excel under Eddie Howe.

  • Alexander Isak Newcastle 2022-23Getty Images

    1Alexander Isak | £63 million | Real Sociedad | 2022

Newcastle United well and truly announced themselves as one of the big players in the transfer market when they confirmed the signing of Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad in a deal worth £63 million in the summer of 2022, thus making him their most-expensive signing ever.

Isak scored nine goals in 37 La Liga games in his first season at Sociedad, before scoring 17 goals in 34 La Liga games in the 2020-21 campaign.

His form dipped somewhat in his third year at the club in terms of goalscoring, however, Isak's overall performance on the pitch prompted the Magpies into making him their primary transfer target for the 2022 summer transfer window.

With great positional awareness and a keen eye for goal, there is little doubt Isak will find himself high on the goalscoring charts for Newcastle.
