  • Newcastle have goalkeeping issues
  • Pope out injured and Dubravka a doubt
  • Karius could play against Milan
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Newcastle are without first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope due to a long-term shoulder injury. Back-up stopper Martin Dubravka has also emerged as a doubt for Newcastle's next game against AC Milan in the Champions League after missing training on Tuesday. If Dubravka is not fit for the game then Eddie Howe will turn to Karius to be his goalkeeper against the Rossoneri. Karius's last outing for Newcastle came in the Carabao Cup final which ended in a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Karius has not played in Europe's premier club competition since a disastrous performance for Liverpool against Real Madrid in 2018. The goalkeeper had a night to forget as he was at fault for two of Madrid's three goals in their 3-1 victory. Tests subsequently revealed that Karius had played despite suffering from concussion. The goalkeeper was distraught after the defeat and subsequently apologised to his Liverpool team-mates and fans on social media.

  • WHAT EDDIE HOWE SAID

Howe was asked about Dubravka's absence at a press conference and offered up the following response: "We are two days after a game so we're obviously trying to manage players. We will see who is fit for tomorrow."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

If Karius does replace Dubravka then Newcastle will have to name a youngster on the bench. Mark Gillespie is not in Newcastle's Champions League squad, meaning either Will Brown or teenagers Adam Harrison or Aidan Harris will be called up.

    WHAT NEXT FOR NEWCASTLE?

Newcastle will be sweating on Dubravka's fitness ahead of what is a key game. The Magpies must beat Milan and hope Dortmund draw or beat PSG in the group's other match if they are to progress to the last 16 of the Champions League.
