Columbus Crew make MLS history defeating Tigres in Mexico in CONCACAF Champions Cup as USMNT Olympic goalkeeper Patrick Schulte is a penalty shootout hero

The Crew became the first MLS team to ever win on the road in Mexico in CONCACAF Champions Cup action after losing the home leg Tuesday night. A 1-1 draw in the home leg was followed by the same result Tuesday evening, and with both sides level on away goals, the match went to extra-time to try and find a winner.

After no result was found, the match was determined from the penalty spot. Former MLS SuperDraft picks Patrick Schulte and Max Arfsten were the heroes late on, coming up clutch in the shootout.

"Patrick has been, again, I'm not surprised to be honest with you, because this is not easy what I'm asking to my players," Columbus head coach Wilfried Nancy said postgame.

"I've learned a lot today about what we can do, about the adjustments that I could have done better. But at the end of the day, Pat deserved that. I'm not surprised because, you know, the first question that people ask me is, 'Do you think that Pat is going to be able to keep going?' And I say, 'Why do you think like this?' Let's see. And he knows that he has to evolve and so I'm really happy for him because I can tell you that he was really, really disappointed when we conceded the [opening] goal."

Schulte's night began with a disaster, he alone was at fault for the opening goal for Tigres, losing control of the ball in the box while trying to play out of the back.

However, he fought back with an incredible goalkeeping performance, saving the Crew in the ensuing penalty shootout with two brilliant saves.

The 23-year-old, who has been linked with a summer move to Premier League powerhouse Arsenal, is in contention to make the U.S. Summer Olympic squad after impressing in the March U23 camp under U.S. boss Marko Mitrovic.

The Crew will now advance to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup where they will take on the winner of CF Monterrey vs Inter Miami Wednesday evening. The reigning MLS champions will clash with Lionel Messi and co. or USMNT striker Brandon Vazquez and Los Rayados.
