'Obstacles that will always exist' - Cristian Romero appears to take swipe at Tottenham ownership over Ange Postecoglou sacking as he posts farewell to Australian just minutes after Thomas Frank is announced as new boss

Romero has delivered a heartfelt farewell to Postecoglou; however, the timing and tone of his message suggest a veiled criticism of Tottenham’s hierarchy, including chairman Daniel Levy. The Argentine defender, who has been linked with a move away from Spurs this summer amid interest from Atletico Madrid, posted his tribute less than an hour after the North London side officially confirmed Frank as Postecoglou’s successor, pointedly omitting any mention of the incoming boss

Postecoglou was fired last week despite leading Spurs to their first trophy in almost 15 years by winning the Europa League. However, a dismal domestic campaign, in which Spurs finished 17th with just 11 league wins, ultimately cost the Australian his job. While most players shared tributes to the outgoing manager immediately, Romero waited until after Frank’s appointment to speak out — a move many fans have interpreted as a sign of disapproval with Spurs' leadership.

Romero, who was vice-captain under Postecoglou and a key figure in the squad, wrote on Instagram: "Ange, thank you for these two incredible seasons. You’re a fantastic coach, but above all, a great person who deserves the best.

"From day one you paved the way despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist. Beyond everything, we won a trophy and went down in the history of this beautiful club, which is the only thing that matters.

"I wish you the best because you deserve the best, and thank you for everything."

With Frank now at the helm, Tottenham face the challenge of moving forward under yet another new manager. The Danish coach will need to win over a dressing room still visibly loyal to Postecoglou, with Romero’s post serving as a reminder that not everyone is aligned with the decision made by the board.
