Kaizer Chiefs 0-1 TS Galaxy: Dan Malesela's charges stun Amakhosi to clinch Nedbank Cup

TS Galaxy made history by becoming the first National First Division (NFD) club to win the Nedbank Cup after defeating Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in the final on Saturday night.

Amakhosi adopted an offensive approach against an unfancied Galaxy side as Ernst Middendorp named five attack-minded players in his starting line-up.

Lebogang Manyama, who was making his first start since he returned from a long-term injury, started up front alongside Khama Billiat and Bernard Parker.

Middendorp's counterpart, Dan Malesela surprisingly named Galaxy's top goalscorer Zakhele Lepasa amongst the substitutes.

Chiefs and Galaxy both struggled to create chances in the opening stages of the game and two goalkeepers were not seriously tested.

Record 13-time Nedbank Cup champions Amakhosi grew into the game and they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box after Kabelo Mahlasela was fouled.

Billiat, who has been nominated for the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament award, stepped up and fired over the crossbar from a set-piece.

The Chiefs defence which has failed to keep a clean sheet in their last seven matches across all competitions was breached in the 20th minute.

Thembinkosi Mbamba found himself in a one-on-one situation with Chiefs keeper Bruce Bvuma, but somehow the Galaxy attacker missed the target.

Amakhosi finished the first half strongly, but they were wasteful as Parker's effort was cleared before it crossed the goal-line by Austin Dube.

The two teams were locked at 0-0 at half-time with Galaxy having frustrated Chiefs.

The Soweto giants dominated the opening stages of the second half, but they were unable to convert their chances with Malesela's side exposed.

Mahlasela and Billiat were both denied by Galaxy's inspirational captain and keeper Ludwe Mpakumpaku, who produced two decent saves to keep Middendorp's charges at bay.

Dumisani Zuma was introduced in the closing stages by Chiefs, who had scored 70% of their goals in the final 15 minutes of their Nedbank Cup games this season.

However, it was Lepasa, who proved to be an inspired substitute as he was fouled inside the Chiefs box and the NFD side was awarded a late penalty.

The Orlando Pirates loanee dusted himself down and fired past Bvuma from the spot-kick to seal a historic 1-0 victory over Chiefs in stoppage time.
