Government supports Paul Put's push for changes at Harambee Stars

The government is willing to foot expenses of extra members of Harambee Stars technical bench as proposed by coach Paul Put.

Sports Principal Secretary Peter Kaberia said that the national government is ready to inject cash into the national team if that’s what it will take for the country to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

“We are ready to support the coach and FKF so that they get the best out of the team and if what the coach wants will take the team to Afcon final in Cameroon, then the government is ready and prepared to help in whichever way.”

Put had tabled a request to Football Kenya Federation outlining impending changes that include reshuffling the technical bench, a move that may see foreign coaches join Stars backroom staff.

The changes, though, may also affect assistant coaches Stanley Okumbi and John Kamau, who may be sacked to pave way for the new staff.

But while Put’s proposal raised a lot of reaction from a section of Kenyan football circle, the government is in support of the proposal to help prepare the team sail past Ghana, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone in the qualifiers.

Kenyan will host Ghana in the second match on March 23 before traveling to Ethiopia. Kenya lost the opening match 2-1 to Sierra Leone last June.
