Ghana coach Appiah defends decision to use Asamoah as substitute against Kenya

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has insisted that it was right to leave Inter Milan midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah out of the starting line-up in the 1-0 defeat to Kenya in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday.

The 29-year-old was dropped to the substitute bench after passing a late fitness test, a move that has led to a backlash from a section of Ghanaians.

Appiah has described it as ‘a technical decision’.

“I don’t field players because of their names in Europe or at club level. I use players who are fit at a particular time," Appiah told Asempa FM.

"The fact that Kwadwo Asamoah was on the bench does not mean he is not a good player. He is one of the best players we have but in certain circumstances especially when it is based on technical grounds, you have to also allow some players in.

"Everybody can attest to the fact that he is a wonderful player that is why he has been signed by big clubs in Europe,” he added.

Asamoah, however, came on as a substitute for Daniel Opare in the second half but his efforts weren't enough to help the team salvage a draw.
