Gent snap up Taiwo Awoniyi on loan from Liverpool

Gent have snapped up Taiwo Awoniyi on a season-long loan from Liverpool.

The player who recently signed an improved five-year deal with the Reds was left out of their tour of the United States in a bid to complete a deal, with the trio of Standard Liege, Anderlecht and Club Brugge believed to be on trail.

But Gent, who finished fourth in the Belgian top-flight last season to secure a spot for the final round of Europa League qualification, have swooped for his signature.

Awoniyi joined the Merseyside outfit from Imperial Soccer Academy in 2015 and had previously been on three different loan spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen and Royal Excel Mouscron.

He will continue in Belgium after his exploits last season with Mouscron where he netted 11 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions.

The Belgian top-flight starts on Friday with Gent travelling to Liege for the season’s curtain raiser, and Awoniyi will hope to play a part.

With compatriots Moses Simon, Samuel Kalu and Anderson Esiti in Yves Vanderhaeghe's setup, integrating into the team should be much easier for the 20-year-old.
