Two questionable uses of VAR have overshadowed Wellington Phoenix's 2-1 win over Newcastle Jets on Sunday in Mark Rudan's A-League debut as coach.
A bright start from both sides saw Newcastle land the first big opportunity in the seventh minute when Jair found himself in space in the box, but the Brazilian couldn't direct his effort on target.
Wellington were playing positively in attack and were rewarded for their persistence in the 32nd minute when a header across goal from Steven Taylor was nodded past Glen Moss by Jets defender Daniel Georgievski.
After taking a 1-0 lead into the break, the Nix thought they had doubled their lead on the hour mark when Sarpreet Singh bundled the ball home only for VAR to intervene and see the decision overturned for handball.
Lucky not to be two goals behind, Newcastle almost found themselves level minutes later only for Filip Kurto to make a brilliant save to deny Nigel Boogaard.
The match opened up considerably in the final half hour and VAR would again have a massive say on the contest as it awarded a questionable penalty to the Nix in the 87th minute for a push on Mitch Nichols.
Roy Krishna stepped up to the spot and after having his penalty stopped, was able to tuck home the rebound to wrap up the win for Wellington.
A cracking Dimitri Petratos strike in injury-time too little, too late for a Jets side that never really got flying against a Nix side that look up for a fight this season.
VAR again the talking point however, as many continue to question its implementation in the A-League.
