Santos have come unstuck in three of their last five games, with even the presence of Neymar unable to inspire them to a productive run of positive results. A 2-1 reversal was endured against Internacional last time out.

Neymar came close to rescuing a point in that contest, with his creative qualities ensuring that Santos were never out of the game, but the 33-year-old playmaker was left frustrated at the final whistle.

He was not as angry as certain members of the home support. Neymar was seen engaging with supporters during the second half of a fixture that saw Santos fall behind early and concede a 75th-minute penalty.

Neymar returned to the same area of the ground at the final whistle, with the ex-Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward having a bone to pick with particularly critical fans. A heated argument saw words exchanged and fingers pointed before Neymar was ushered away.

Santos’ latest loss leaves them 17th in the table and stuck inside the relegation zone. This is not what Neymar had in mind when returning to his roots and committing to a contract extension through to the end of 2025.
