Mexico national team suffer equipment theft upon arrival in Oakland

Mexico had an unexpected setback in Oakland, California, where part of their training equipment was stolen, according to a report from ESPN.

The theft occurred when unknown individuals broke the lock on one of the team’s transport vehicles and took a trunk belonging to the equipment staff. Inside the stolen container were training items, though no players or staff members were directly affected since the incident happened while the truck was parked.

Javier Aguirre’s squad arrived in Oakland on Sunday night, beginning preparations for their friendly against Japan. The first group to travel included players based in Liga MX, later joined by those playing in Europe.

Mexico’s 25-man roster features names such as Rodrigo Huescas, Hirving Lozano, Diego Lainez, and Germán Berterame, all looking to earn a place under Aguirre. César Huerta was ruled out after suffering a muscular injury.

Looking ahead, Mexico have scheduled two more friendlies in October: against Colombia in Dallas and against Ecuador in Guadalajara. In November, the federation hopes to finalize two additional matches on home soil, one of which is expected to be against Uruguay.

The Tricolor will face Japan on Saturday in Oakland before traveling to Nashville to play South Korea three days later. The September fixtures are part of Mexico’s preparation for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
