  • Onana criticised for his role during Coman's goal
  • Goalkeeper was blamed for not closing down the angle
  • Fans hit out at Cameroonian on social media
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The French forward put a dagger in the hearts of the United faithful after he pierced the net in the 70th minute to send the Premier League giants packing from Europe on Tuesday evening. Erik ten Hag's side lost four of the six group stage games to finish bottom of the pool and miss out on a Europa League play-off spot.

Onana, who had a nervy start to his life in Manchester, was once again blamed for the goal as the Cameroonian did not come out of his line to narrow down the angle for Coman for the shot.

  • WHAT THE FANS SAID

"Christ, Onana genuinely is dreadful," said one X user. "How does he, 1, almost fall over before Coman has taken his shot, and 2, stay on his line?"

A second fan added: "I don't want to keep digging out Onana, but why is it that the only time he comes off his line is when he's about to ping a ball 60 yards forward and that's it, he's literally standing there giving Coman the easiest finish he'll ever have."

While another added: "That is criminal positioning from Onana. Not even an attempt at closing down Coman."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United snapped up Onana for £48 million ($61m) during the summer transfer window from Inter but the keeper has struggled to live up to expectations. Individual mistakes from the shot-stopper have cost United dearly throughout the season but Ten Hag continues to keep his faith in the 27-year-old. He was at fault for gifting two goals to Galatasaray during United’s 3-3 draw on Turkish soil, while also being at fault against Bayern in the reverse leg at Allianz Arena.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

United have lost 12 of the 24 matches that they have played across all competitions and have shipped in 39 goals.

    WHAT NEXT FOR ONANA?

The pressure keeps increasing on Onana to bring out his best. United have already been linked with Mike Maignan of AC Milan as Onana's performances have given rise to more questions than answers. He will be facing a stern test against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday as the league leaders hope to further consolidate their position at the top by picking the three points on offer.
