Woodburn set to join Sheffield United on loan from Liverpool

Ben Woodburn is set to join Sheffield United on loan from Liverpool before the start of the Championship season.

Woodburn has impressed during the Reds' pre-season tour of the United States, but is unlikely to see too many first-team minutes this term.

Thus, the Blades are poised to take him on a short-term deal, beating a host of other Championship clubs to his signature.

Aston Villa and Wigan Athletic both approached Liverpool over the possibility of acquiring Woodburn, while Hull City were also interested.

Liverpool were not keen on allowing Woodburn to leave for Villa, however, with Jack Grealish still on their books, despite interest from Tottenham, and likely to play ahead of the 18-year-old.

Sheffield United want Woodburn to replace David Brooks, who has joined Bournemouth for a £10 million ($13m) fee.

Woodburn was left out of Liverpool's training camp in Evian this week due to the possibility of a move.

Jurgen Klopp was delighted with the teenager's progress in America, saying: “Ben Woodburn is 100% back.

“How it is with young boys, from time to time the improvement doesn’t go day by day, but he has played such a good pre-season.”

Sheyi Ojo may join Woodburn in leaving the club, either in a permanent transfer or on loan, with Middlesbrough interested in securing his services, while Lazar Markovic would also be allowed to leave.
