Wilshere offers positive update on Arsenal contract saga

Jack Wilshere maintains that Arsenal is “where I want to be” and is confident that a contract extension will be thrashed out.

The England international continues to head towards free agency, as his current deal with the Gunners expires at the end of the season.

Fresh terms have been mooted for some time, with Arsene Wenger expressing a desire to get an agreement in place.

No paperwork has been signed, but Wilshere remains optimistic regarding his chances of staying at Emirates Stadium past the end of the season.

The 26-year-old midfielder told Sky Sports when quizzed again on renewal discussions: "We are still in the same position really. Not much has changed. We are still talking.

"Obviously the boss has left which has changed things a little bit because I don't know who is going to be the manager next year and that can change things.

"But we are still talking and I am hopeful and the club is hopeful we can get something done."

Wenger has confirmed that he will be moving on in the summer after 22 years at the Arsenal helm, but Wilshere is adamant that the club who nurtured him through their academy system remains the right place for him.

He added: "To be honest with you, I haven't really thought about [moving somewhere else]. I have said before that is where I want to be and I have not really had much time to think about moving clubs.

"We have been playing every three or four days for the last three or four months so it has been difficult.

"I am concentrating on games and obviously the boss left so it has been a bad couple of months to be honest."

Wilshere has made 36 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions this season.

He has been able to steer clear of the niggling injury issues which have held him back in recent years, with the current campaign proving to be his most productive in terms of first-team outings since 2010-11.
