Having tasted defeat at the hands of Juventus last season, Spurs were again tested in the group stages alongside Inter Milan, Barcelona and PSV. The progressed unharmed to take on Borussia Dortmund in the first knockout round.

A convincing aggregate win (4-0) against the German club set up a quarter-final against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. Despite working on a limited budget, Pochettino worked his magic against City as well and came across a surprise package from the Netherlands, in the form of Ajax.
