2018-19 UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season: Goalkeepers - Alisson Becker

Liverpool’s march to a sixth UEFA Champions League title at Madrid in May this year was down to several notable performers but the impact of goalkeeper Alisson Becker cannot be overstated.

The Brazilian custodian took no time in finding his feet at Anfield after his big money move from AS Roma and he was pivotal to the Reds’ charge towards a memorable European triumph while they came agonisingly close to breaking their Premier League title drought as well.

Sweeper keepers have become the rage in modern football and there are barely any better proponents of that art than Alisson who provided Liverpool with a reliable final shield behind a formidable defence marshalled by Virgil Van Dijk.

The 26-year-old played every single minute of Liverpool’s Champions League campaign and kept a total of six clean sheets in his 12 appearances. The former Roma man was instrumental in Liverpool booking their place in the knock-outs after his brilliant injury-time save against Napoli while his efforts in the Madrid final to deny several Tottenham attempts were noteworthy as well.

It was then no surprise that the goalkeeper pipped Hugo Lloris and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to be voted as UEFA’s Goalkeeper of the Season by the top coaches and journalists from Europe.

The Brazilian has turned out to be a shrewd signing by Jurgen Klopp with his playing style perfectly complementing that of the German coach and the goalkeeper will have a big role to play once again as Liverpool chase the highest honours in the 2019-20 campaign.
