Last season's Champions League runners-up start the new Premier League campaign at home to a newly-promoted side who could make them work for a win

Aston Villa's first match back in the Premier League after three years is on Saturday afternoon at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

Dean Smith's side enjoyed a successful pre-season winning all five friendlies, although their first competitive game back in the top flight is a tough one against a Spurs team that lose precious few matches at home.

Latest odds

Indeed, Mauricio Pochettino's side won 12 of their 19 home league matches last term and bet365 offer them at 3/10 (1.30) to begin the new campaign with a victory.

Villa, for their part, have won just one of their last 17 games against Spurs in all competitions and are priced 9/1 (10.00) to pick up three points. The draw can be backed at 17/4 (5.25).

Team news

Spurs have forward Heung-min Son suspended following a red card in the penultimate game of last season. Ben Davies, Serge Aurier, Ryan Sessegnon and Juan Foyth are all unavailable. New signings Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso could make their debuts.

Villa have slight concerns over Ezri Konsa and Jed Steer, although both should travel to the capital.

Preview

Last season Spurs tended to struggle to break down teams that came to north London to defend.

Whilst Pochettino's side won their home matches against bottom-half teams like Crystal Palace, Cardiff, Newcastle, Burnley and Brighton, all of those victories came with under 2.5 goals in the match.

Indeed, Spurs needed late goals against the latter three to claim 1-0 wins after being frustrated by their opponents.

Villa, too, are unlikely to risk too much going forward and will probably aim to frustrate the hosts once more, which could lead to another low scoring game.

Tips and predictions

Spurs to win and under 2.5 goals is available at 7/2 (4.50), which looks like an attractive option. Seven of the north Londoners' 12 home wins last season came without conceding a goal and the hosts to win to nil can be backed at 2/1 (3.00).
