Top 10 Father & Sons In Football - Part I

Cesare and Paolo Maldini

We start off with the Maldini family from Italy. Both father Cesare and son Paolo have lifted the European Cup as captain of Milan and fittingly the two feats took place in a gap of exactly forty years. Cesare also had a successful time as coach after retiring as a player while Paolo put an end to his 24 year old professional career at the end of last season after winning a host of major honours at club level and making more than hundred international appearances for Italy.

Brian and Nigel Clough

Late Brian Clough was a prolific striker for both Middlesbrough and Sunderland during his playing days. But his real success came as a manager first when he guided Derby County to promotion and then a league title. Then a few years later he won the league with Nottingham Forest in their first season after promotion. But his greatest achievement was lifting two consecutive European Cups as manager of Forest. Son Nigel played under his father at Forest and also had a spell with Liverpool and like his father was a striker. Nigel was player manager of Burton Albion for quite a few years. Finally in 2009 he followed in his father’s footsteps by taking the managerial role at Derby County.

Arnor and Eidur Gudjohnsen

This is probably the most interesting father-son combination in this list simply because they were involved in the same international match as teammates. Son Eidur replaced father Arnor during Iceland’s 3-0 friendly win over Estonia in 1996. Eidur is the more famous of the two as he played in the Premier League for Bolton and Chelsea and then won the Champions League with Barcelona. Therefore many wouldn’t know that Arnor also used to be a striker and won over seventy caps for Iceland and is presently the agent of Eidur.

Who's the best sub for a father? His son, of course.

Anthimos and Michalis Kapsis

Anthimos Kapsis was part of the Panathinaikos team that lost to Ajax 0-2 in the 1971 European Cup final. Unfortunately, defender Anthimos scored an own goal in that game but overall had a distinguished career winning over thirty caps for Greece and also appearing in Euro 80. His son, Michalis was a member of the Greece team which emerged as Euro 2004 champions. Like his father, Michalis was also a defender and made just over thirty appearances at international level.

Miguel and Xabi Alonso

Miguel Alonso was a highly accomplished midfielder for Real Sociedad in the late 70’s and early 80’s. He won two league titles with them but joined Barcelona after representing Spain in the 1982 World Cup. He also had coaching spells at a few Basque clubs of Spain. Son Xabi also had a successful time at Sociedad before joining English giants Liverpool. After five memorable years at Anfield he is now one of the best midfielders in the world and part of the current ‘Neo Galactico’ era at Real Madrid.

Frank Lampard Sr. & Jr.

Frank Lampard senior spent eighteen years at West Ham United, where he made his name playing at left back. He took up coaching after retiring as a player and was the assistant coach of the Hammers when Frank junior began his professional career at Upton Park. Unlike his father, Frank junior is reputed for his intelligent play and goals from midfield and without any doubt has been the more successful of the two at both club and international level.

Sorry Dad, I picked Chelsea.

Juan Ramon and Juan Sebastien Veron

Father Ramon and son Sebastien are referred to as La Bruja (The Witch) and La Brujita (Little Witch) respectively. Though never capped at international level for Argentina, Juan Ramon was known for his technical ability. He became famous while playing for Argentinean club Estudiantes which won three Copa Libertadores in the late sixties. Sebastien has been more successful as a player but one of his best personal moments came earlier this year when he emulated his father by lifting the Copa Libertadores with Estudiantes.

Fabio and Carlo Cudicini

Fabio Cudicini was a highly rated goalkeeper in Italy during the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s. He made his name while playing for AC Milan when he won the European Cup with them in 1969. Son Carlo was an unused sub for Milan 24 years later in another European Cup final and after spells at quite a few Italian clubs, he finally made his mark while at Chelsea. However he never really cemented his regular place there and after nearly ten seasons in West London he signed for Tottenham and is currently second choice keeper behind Heurelho Gomes.

Johan and Jordi Cruyff

The name Johan Cruyff needs no introduction in football. The Dutch master is perhaps the greatest footballer from Netherlands and also one of the best ever. He was unfortunate not to win any World Cup but had immense success at club level for Ajax, Barcelona and Feyenord. Son Jordi was named after Sant Jordi, patron saint of Catalonia. Unlike sons of most famous footballers, Jordi had a fairly successful professional career. The attacking midfielder had spells at both Barcelona and Man United and is currently playing for a club from Malta.

Manuel Sanchis Martinez and Hontiyuelo

Father Manuel Sanchis Martinez is a former Real Madrid defender, who won the European Cup in 1966. He didn’t have much success at international level but did score for Spain in the 1966 world cup. Son Manuel Sanchis Hontiyuelo emulated his father by winning the Champions League with Real first in 98 and then in 2000. The Manuel Sanchis duo is one of only three father-son pairs who have won the European cup. We have already mentioned about one of the other two, the other one will be revealed in part two.
