Tony Popovic throws his hat into Socceroos coaching ring

Tony Popovic has spoke of his ambition to coach the Socceroos, but admitted the FFA has yet to contact him about the currently vacant position.

The former Western Sydney Wanderers manager has been without a job since being fired Turkish Super Lig side Karabukspor last month.

With Australia's appearance at the 2018 World Cup less than six months away, the FFA have said a new coach won't be appointed until mid-February, despite former boss Ange Postecoglou resigning more than a month ago.

Popovic talked of the honour it would be to lead the Socceroos, but said there has been no dialogue with the governing body about managing the team in Russia.

"Of course (the Australia job is) on my radar one day, but I haven’t spoken to anyone and it’s not something I’m waiting for,” Popovic told The Daily Telegraph.

"If I was part of the Socceroos equation, that’s for FFA to decide. I’d love to do it one day, and the opportunity would be a great honour. I can only deal with what’s in front of me now.

"If there’s a job for me in Europe tomorrow that I thought was right, I’d take it tomorrow."

The FFA announced on Thursday that the Socceroos will play a March friendly against Norway in Oslo, with another exhibition match versus an unknown opponent soon to be revealed.

Australia has been drawn in World Cup group C alongside France, Denmark and Peru.
