2022 Awcon Qualifiers: South Africa 6-0 Mozambique (13-0 agg) - Banyana Banyana rout visitors again

Banyana Banyana eased into the second round of the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers following the 6-0 thumping of Mozambique at FNB Stadium to hand themselves a 13-0 aggregate scoreline on Tuesday.

A brace each by Linda Motlahlo and Hildah Magaia, both scoring in either half, as well as goals from Bambanani Mbane (10th minute) and substitute Sibulele Holweni’s 85th strike handed South Africa another big victory.

It was a convincing follow-up to the 7-0 victory recorded in last week’s away leg.

For Motlhalo, it was another double in two games after scoring twice in Mozambique and Tuesday’s brace was in her 50th cap for Banyana.

Going into this match enjoying a comfortable lead, Banyana coach Ellis started captain Janine van Wyk, striker Melinda Kgadiete and goalkeeper Kaylin Swart on the bench.

Atletico Madrid forward Thembi Kgatlana, who sat out the first leg, was in the starting line-up while Regirl Ngobeni started in goal.

Their opponents Mozambique also made a number of changes with captain Cina Manuel being dropped for Aurora Ngale.

Goalkeeper Eva Costa was also replaced by Virginia Fernando.

If Mozambique arrived at FNB Stadium with hopes of overturning the 7-0 deficit, they were quickly deflated when the hosts went ahead through centre-back Mbane.

From then, the visitors’ play did not inspire any hopes of a comeback with no meaningful combination upfront between Lonica Tsamwane, Samira Latifo and Neusia Colete.

Banyana were always comfortable and doubled their lead on the afternoon via Motlhalo, who beat Fernando on 32 minutes.

Magaia was to make it 3-0 for the hosts five minutes before the break before she was back on the scoresheet in the 50th minute.

Gabriela Salgado, who grabbed a brace in the first leg, almost scored 10 minutes later but shot over the bar.

But Motlhalo made up for her teammate's miss in the 65th minute by completing her double before Holweni sealed the heavy victory five minutes from the final whistle.
