South Africa 3-1 Malawi: Banyana inch closer to Cosafa Cup semi-final

South Africa completed a come-from-behind win to boost their bid for a semi-final spot in the Cosafa Women's Cup with a 3-1 win over Malawi on Friday.

Following their record 17-0 win over Comoros, Banyana Banayana were made to dig deep by the She-Flames to earn back-to-back wins at the Wolfson Stadium.

Desiree Ellis' side started the contest on the back foot when Asimenye Simwaka fired the Malawians in front four minutes into the game.

In the 14th minute, the hosts thought they were back in the mix after scoring from a defensive blunder but the referee ruled out for a foul on Malawi goalkeeper.

Despite dominating, it took Banyana until the 36th minute to level the tie through Lebogana Ramalepe with a wonderful strike.

The home side could have lost concentration after an injury to captain Janine Van Wyk but substitute Noxolo Cesane gave them the lead 18 minutes after the restart.

Abel Mkandawire's attack, led by Linda Kasenda, pushed for a late comeback but Amada Mthandi's strike five minute from fulltime killed off the hopes of the She-Flames.

The result sees Banyana on six points from two games and they will face Madagascar in their final Group tie on Monday.

In other results, debutantes Comoros suffered their second defeat in the competition, crashing 5-1 to Madagascar in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

Also, Zimbabwe thrashed Mozambique 4-0 at the Wolfson Stadium to claim back-to-back wins in Group C.
