Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac made serious accusations against the Munich coaching staff after Saturday's 2-1 defeat. TV cameras picked up a heated exchange in the first half. Speaking to Sky , the 54-year-old said Bayern assistant coach Aaron Danks had insulted him: "My English is quite good. So I understood quite well what he wanted to say to me. Then I said: a bit more respect. That's all I said," he explained.
When asked exactly what Danks had said, Kovac did not want to go into any more detail. "In the end, it was clear what he said. You can discuss things, but to label me like that was not okay. I think it's down to him. He should apologise."
Dream debut despite defeat! Borussia Dortmund new signing impresses across the board against Bayern Munich
On the pitch, the defeat made for a false start to the new competitive season for Dortmund. The record champions were already 2-0 up before the break thanks to goals from Nathaniel Brown (28) and Michael Olise (45+1).
After the interval, Borussia Dortmund showed character, driven by new signing Giannis Konstantelias, who made a strong debut after replacing Samuele Inacio and helped create Fabio Silva's goal for 2-1. But the equaliser never came, with Maximilian Beier missing a gilt-edged chance in stoppage time. Kovac's side now turn their attention to next Saturday, when Hamburger SV await in the Bundesliga opener.
