Why Ronaldo launched reporter's mic into lake

Cristiano Ronaldo caused a stir on the day of Portugal's crunch Group F clash against Hungary at Euro 2016 by launching a reporter's microphone into a lake, but a possible motive has since been revealed.

The Real Madrid ace was taking a stroll with his team-mates through Lyon when he was asked a question by a journalist from Portugal news station CMTV.

Ronaldo snubbed the reporter's question before launching his equipment into the lake, leading to the forward making headlines around the globe.

But it has since emerged that Ronaldo has a long-standing feud with CMTV, who have previously covered stories involving his personal and family life over the years.

It has also come to light that this isn't the first time Ronaldo, who is yet to get off the mark after two games at the Euros, has refused to answer questions from the 24-hour news network.

In an interview with the BBC, the journalist in question - Diogo Torres - believes the strained relationship between Ronaldo and CMTV is the reason why the 31-year-old reacted in the manner he did.

"I asked Ronaldo if he was prepared for the match," Torres said. "He didn't answer. He grabbed my mic and threw it into the lake.

"I'm not sure why he did it. I think it was a momentary thing. I think he would not have done it if he had thought about it.

"We are a TV channel of a major newspaper in Portugal. We produce a lot of news about him. Some of it he doesn't like. Perhaps that's why he did it. But it wasn't a personal thing.

"I've not had an apology from Ronaldo or the team. We travelled to France on the same plane with the players and will fly back with them."

Portugal take on group leaders Hungary at Stade des Lumieres on Wednesday knowing they must avoid defeat or risk bowing out of the tournament.
