Real Madrid have announced that they will wear plain shirts when they get their Champions League campaign underway this evening at the Letzigrund, as they are not allowed to advertise bwin.com by Swiss law.
A statement on their official website, realmadrid.com, read:
"The Swiss authorities only allow gambling to be advertised when they are state-owned companies.
"As a result, and given that Switzerland is not bound to European Union legislation, Real Madrid and bwin have chosen not to display the bwin.com logo on the team's shirts during the Champions League match between FC Zurich and Real Madrid."
Bwin have encountered similar problems in the past - French club Monaco were forced to remove advertising boards for the betting site before their league match with Le Mans in 2006.
