Premier League Odds: Solskjaer still in pole position for Manchester United job

Despite being an interim appointment after the departure of Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks set to be handed the Manchester United job on a full-time basis.

bet365 are just 1/10 (1.10) about the 46-year-old Norwegian remaining in charge on September 1 2019, essentially a market on who will take over at Old Trafford permanently. This market can be found under the Soccer section by selecting "Manager Special".

A dramatic second leg comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 may have sealed the deal for the man who has overseen 14 wins from his 19 matches in charge of the Red Devils.

Even considering that dramatic turnaround, United could still end the campaign without a trophy and outside the Premier League’s top four spots.

Defeat to Wolves in the FA Cup ended any hope of domestic silverware this term while their quarter final pairing with Barcelona has seen Solskjaer's side drift to 20/1 (21.0) to be crowned European champions. The same firm go 3/1 (4.0) that they qualify for the semi-finals.

Assuming Manchester City and Liverpool are already in, North London pair Tottenham (4/9) and Arsenal (8/15) lead the charge for the two available Champions League spots. A 2-0 loss at the Emirates last time out has seen United pushed out to 5/4 (2.25) for a top four finish.

The question for punters to consider at this stage seems to be; would a failure to secure a seat at Europe's top table, combined with no silverware, still be enough to see the Norwegian installed on a full-time basis?

Mauricio Pochettino was heavily linked with the role in the weeks immediately following Mourinho's departure and at 8/1 (9.0) the current Spurs boss is still the nearest challenger according to the bookmakers.

Such is the confidence in Solskjaer remaining in place though, Pochettino is the only other candidate current available at a single figure price. Max Allegri (25/1), Antonio Conte (28/1), Diego Simeone and Laurent Blanc (both 33/1) come next in the betting, albeit a long way behind the market principle.

Even with lingering doubts about the key milestone of securing Champions League football next term, bet365 seem convinced that Solskjaer has done enough to warrant a permanent deal at Manchester United.
