Next Newcastle United Manager Betting: Punters put their faith in Arteta

Mikel Arteta is the latest name to be backed to become the next Newcastle United manager.

On Wednesday morning William Hill reported a flurry of bets on the current Manchester City assistant taking over at St James' Park, cutting his price to 2/1 (3.0) from 5/1 (6.0).

Arteta spent over a decade in the Premier League as a player at Everton and Arsenal before joining the coaching staff at the Etihad Stadium in July 2016.

This is not the first top-flight job that he has been linked with either. The 37-year-old was red-hot favourite for the Gunners job at one stage after Arsene Wenger's departure before Unai Emery was eventually appointed at the Emirates Stadium last summer.

Rafael Benitez left Newcastle after failing to agree a new contract and has since moved to China where he'll take charge of CSL club Dalian Yifang.

Since then, several names have been linked with the role although there appears no concrete progress on appointing a successor.

With speculation regarding a potential sale ongoing, the club may find some stumbling blocks in their pursuit of candidates who would want the long-term ownership situation resolved prior to considering such a role.

“This gamble on Arteta has come as bit of a bolt from the blue and his odds have come in considerably over the last few hours,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. “Sean Dyche has also come in whilst Tuesday’s favourite, Roberto Martinez, has drifted from 5/1 to 10/1.”

Dyche has been at Burnley for seven years, overseeing two promotions to the Premier League where the Clarets have remained since 2016. Although the 48-year-old has a contract at Turf Moor until 2022, he’s seen as one of the most likely names to be considered on Tyneside.

Currently in charge of Belgium, Martinez is firm favourite to take over at Barcelona should the Catalan club decide to move on from Ernesto Valverde. That looks increasingly unlikely though as the Spanish champions continue their preparations for the new season.

David Moyes is 12/1 (13.0) to make a Premier League return by taking over at St James' Park while Claudio Ranieri is 14/1 (15.0) with William Hill.
