Three Mexicans won a title this weekend, but even that triumph was overshadowed by good news for the Mexico national team.
Less than two months after suffering a fracture in his clavicle with El Tri, defender Carlos Salcedo returned to the field for Eintracht Frankfurt and helped his club to a 3-0 win over Hamburg on Sunday. He played 90 minutes as the left center back in Niko Kovac's three-man back line and looks ready not only to help Frankfurt chase a Europa League place but also to start for Mexico at the World Cup. Marco Fabian was an unused substitute.
The champions? That was Porto trio Hector Herrera, Diego Reyes and Jesus Corona. Herrera was the captain as usual and lifted the league trophy during the celebrations after a 2-1 victory over Feirense. Reyes started that match but left with a knock and will miss the final game of the regular season to rest up ahead of this summer in Russia.
Guillermo Ochoa continues to show his reputation for excellent showings in tournaments is deserved. He made five stops as Standard kept a clean sheet in a 5-0 win over Genk in the league playoffs. His side plays Anderlecht on Thursday.
There was some speculation among Mexico fans that there could be a Mexican vs. Mexican matchup on Friday in Spain, but we were denied the chance. While Miguel Layun played for Sevilla in a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad, Hector Moreno didn't come off the bench for La Real. Layun could face Real Madrid in a league matchup Wednesday.
We did see that showdown in the Netherlands, however, as Hirving Lozano closed out his fantastic debut season in the Eredivisie with a draw against a Groningen team that featured Uriel Antuna. Mexico midfielder Omar Govea was in attendance as a fan.
