The Portuguese has been out of management since being sacked by Manchester United but could be set for a Premier League return with the Magpies

Jose Mourinho is the early favourite to take over at Newcastle after the club announced Rafael Benitez will leave the club on June 30.

The Spaniard was in the hotseat at St James’ Park for over three years but, despite winning the Championship and a pair of impressive seasons in the Premier League with limited funds, has failed to agree a new contract.

William Hill offer 5/1 (6.0) that Mourinho returns to management after over six months out, with the Portuguese having taken a break since being fired from Manchester United in December 2018.

Newcastle would be the third Premier League side Mourinho has managed, and ninth in his career, and would certainly represent a signal of intent from the Magpies to hire a man with eight top-flight titles to his name.

It is worth noting that managers must take charge for 10 consecutive, competitive matches, to be deemed a winner in this market.

Mikel Arteta is also available at 5/1 (6.0) to make his bow as manager, having previously been heavily linked with the vacant Arsenal job last summer before Unai Emery was appointed.

The former Everton midfielder may take some prying away from his job as assistant coach at Manchester City, with his experience under Pep Guardiola likely to be a factor if Newcastle do approach him.

It is 8/1 (9.0) that Garry Monk joins the north-east club just days after being sacked by Championship outfit Birmingham City, whilst Gennaro Gattuso and Patrick Vieira are both 10/1 (11.0) shots.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s odds on being on relegated next season have been cut to 7/2 (4.50) from 5/1 (6.0) with William Hill following the news that Benitez would be leaving.

That puts them sixth in the betting. Newly-promoted duo Sheffield United (4/6) and Norwich City (10/11) lead the way in the relegation market, with Burnley 7/4 (2.75) to drop down after four seasons in the Premier League.

Brighton are available at 2/1 (3.0), having finished runners up to Newcastle in the Championship two years ago, whilst play-off winners Aston Villa can be backed at 9/4 (3.25).
