The first chance for Kariobangi Sharks fell to Erick Kapaito in the 15th minute, but his shot from about 25 yards went over the bar.

Against expectations, the William Muluya-led side took the lead in the 25th minute.

Duke Abuya latched onto a long ball and the forward worked his way into the six-yard area before slotting home the opener.

The Toffees had a chance to score in the 32nd minute, however, Morgan Schneiderlin's effort was blocked by the defender with the goalkeeper well-beaten.

A few seconds later, Harrison Mwendwa found himself onside with acres of space as well, but he failed to put the ball into the back of the net.

A great chance for Everton fell to Nathan Broadhead ijust before half-time, when Theo Walcott managed to find him in the danger zone, but he shot his effort over the goal and into the stands.

After the break, Everton came back stronger, trying to get past their resolute hosts

In the 55th minute the Merseysiders leveled matters when Patillah Omotto committed a foul just outside the 18-yard area and the referee gave a free-kick.

The set-piece was taken by substitute Joe Williams, whose low drive caught the wall and found Bwire off guard.

The custodian was called into action again with about 20 minutes to go, this time around ensuring Broadhead’s header went wide for a corner.

Neither side could get a winner as the defenders guarded their defence with zeal, and cleared any danger.

The match had to be decided by the penalties and Bwire saved two before scoring the decider. Others who scored their penalties for Sharks are Lemu Geoffrey, Sven Yidah and George Abege.

Everton scored courtesy of Broadhead, Bowler Josh and Horby Fraser, with Williams and Adeniran denied by the goalkeeper.
