Inter Milan slam the door in Barcelona's face

Giuseppe Marotta, president of Inter, has closed the door on speculation about Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez leaving the club, confirming that the Nerazzurri captain faces no circumstances that would prompt him to depart.

Marotta told DAZN before Inter's opening match against Monza in the 2026-2027 Serie A season: "Lautaro is our captain and represents the history of Inter at present, and the circumstances that would prompt him to leave do not exist. We should not even talk about that."

The confirmation comes with reports over the Argentine striker's future refusing to go away. Martinez plays a pivotal role in the team, both technically and as a leader, and stands among the most prominent members of the squad crowned Serie A champions.

Spanish newspaper Sport ran with the line "The Inter president closes the door on Barcelona," explaining that "Marotta addresses the reports linking Lautaro Martinez to the Catalan club," ruling out any possibility of the Argentine leaving this summer.

Inter's ambitions

According to the website of journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Marotta spoke about the team's objectives for the new campaign. Holding the league title, he stressed, obliges the players to raise their ambition while keeping the mentality that drove the club to its recent successes.

"We must raise the ceiling of our aspirations, while being aware that we are champions of Italy," he explained. "We start with the same motivations and objectives we had last season, holding fast to the winning culture that distinguished us during recent years."

Continuity built the project, the club president pointed out, but this summer the management had to weigh up the age of a number of players. The dressing room holds more than 30 titles between them, he confirmed, giving the group great experience and weight.

Possible moves

On the transfer market, Marotta left the door open to fresh deals before the window shuts, but stressed that any move would come in coordination with the coach and in line with the team's needs.

The management is monitoring the opportunities available in the final stage of the mercato, he added: "If a genuine need arises, we will reinvest." For now, he believes Inter's current squad has the quality to compete.

Inter, holders of the Serie A title, open the new season against Monza at the San Siro. It is an early test for a team chasing back-to-back titles and a firmer place among the giants of Italian football.
