Ihefu FC 0-1 Mtibwa Sugar: Newbies suffer second loss in top tier

Mtibwa Sugar moved to fifth in the Tanzania Mainland League after their slim 1-0 win against newcomers Ihefu FC on Friday.

The Sugar Millers came into the match full of confidence after they had managed to hold champions Simba SC to a 1-1 draw in their latest outing. After an opening day 0-0 with Ruvu Shooting, it was vital for the team to give their best and get maximum points.

Ihefu started their campaign with a 2-1 loss to Wekundu wa Msimbazi which they followed up with a 1-0 win last weekend over Ruvu Shooting.

On Friday, it was the hosts who started the game on a high, trying to put the sugar belt side under pressure. But the visitors kept their cool owing to their experience in the top tier.

Their calmness and experience paid dividends in the 34th minutes - the hosts lost possession in the middle of the pitch, and the ball fell to the opponents. An initial shot was blocked, but the ball fell kindly on Jaffary Kibaya, who held his cool, rounded the defender before finding the back of the net.

Neither of the two teams could find the second goal of the game after the break.

In another league match played, Polisi Tanzania and JKT Tanzania settled for a 1-1 draw.

The hosts needed half an hour to open the scoring after a defender handled the ball just outside the danger zone.

Daruesh Saliboko took his spot, looked the way the keeper was standing before unleashing a low drive into the corner to hand his team a deserved lead.

The lead lasted until the 64th minute. JKT won a free-kick about 45 yards from their opponent's goal. The ball was floated in and the defenders failed to deal with it, allowing Kelvin Kongwe Sabato to head it past the custodian and hand his team a leveller, and a point in the process.

KMC lead the standings with maximum points, same with second-placed Azam FC, newcomers Dodoma Jiji FC and Biashara Mara United.

Simba SC and Yanga SC have managed to collect four points from as many games.
