2018-19 UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season: Defenders - Trent Alexander-Arnold

At just 20, Trent Alexander-Arnold has already established himself as one of the best right-backs in the world. The England international had an efficient and near-flawless Champions League campaign last season where he came clutch in crunch fixtures.

Although numbers do little justice to what he brings with his game, that Alexander-Arnold registered an average of two key-passes, two accurate crosses and maintained a healthy passing accuracy is a testimony to his offensive brilliance.

Like most attacking full-backs, the 20-year-old was also vulnerable to getting caught out of position but his blitzing pace allowed him to make up for any blunder higher up the pitch.

Alexander-Arnold’s chemistry with Sadio Mane was yet another talking point from Liverpool’s successful Champions League season. The two linked up very well and aptly complemented each other in the final third. The youngster’s three assists in the competition paint a picture of his prolificacy in the final third.

Defensively, he was solid. The right-back rarely had an off-day and produced inspired performances in all the knockout games. Alexander-Arnold’s best game of the season arrived in testing circumstances against a rampaging Barcelona side.

The 20-year-old grabbed the headlines following Liverpool’s historic comeback for his resourcefulness ahead of their fourth goal. He took a quick corner after figuring that the Catalan defence was asleep and Divock Origi just had to poke the ball into the back of the net to complete the wonderful comeback.

Alexander-Arnold also put on an impressive performance in defence, suffocating the likes Jordi Alba, Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Rakitic with his pressing and forcing several mistakes.

It is no wonder the Englishman has made the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season.
