Cecafa Cup: Kenya triumph over Tanzania to finish third

Kenya have finished third in the 2019 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup after beating Tanzania 2-1 in Kampala on Thursday.

Two goals scored in the first half were enough to hand the 2017 champions third spot after registering a second consecutive win over Kilimanjaro Stars.

Gor Mahia's captain Kenneth Muguna opened the scores in the 15th minute before Bandari forward Abdalla Hassan added the second in the 36th minute. Tanzania scored their consolation goal in the 82nd minute through Gadiel Michael.

Kilimanjaro Stars won a late penalty after Johnstone Omurwa handled the ball inside the box and successfully converted it but their late resurgence could not deny Kenya finishing third in the competition.

Kenya were eliminated in the first semi-final by Eritrea after going down 4-1 on Tuesday while Tanzania were defeated by hosts Uganda when they went down late in the 85th minute to a Fahad Bayo header.

The two countries were both in Group B where Kenya emerged top of the pool with maximum points. Tanzania emerged second after losing the first match against Harambee Stars before registering consequent wins in the other matches.
