Cape Town City goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters has bemoaned his side’s decision of opting against signing veteran midfielder Michael Essien.
City were offered the well-travelled and highly experienced former Chelsea and Ghana midfielder.
The 34-year-old is on a lookout for a new home after leaving Greek side Panathinaikos, but the proposed move to City fell through.
“I think signing him would’ve been good for the club. The coach told us that he had Michael Essien’s portfolio and the name did pop up but I do not know why they never signed him," Walters told Goal.
“But if he had come, he would definitely have added some value and some experience. And he would’ve helped a lot of our players," he said.

“Maybe I am a little disappointed we didn’t get him, but there must be a reason the clubs did not sign him."
Meanwhile, Walters also believes that City have used the recess to recoup and improve from their weaknesses and are ready for the return to action of the Premier Soccer League.
“I think we’ve prepared pretty well for the return of action,” he added.
“We never lost much fitness over the two weeks that we were off and I think we had an opportunity to pick up from our weaknesses and obviously how to improve on our strengths, and we know that it is going to be a lot tougher going into the second round," Walters continued.
“Everyone is fighting for something, the championship, the top eight and some team are fighting for survival."
“So we going to have our work cut out but we prepared well. We had some good friendless in Johannesburg, strong opposition because we only have one strong opposition in Cape Town with Ajax (Cape Town)," he stressed.
“I think we are good to go and we have a lot of tough encounters and I think the first three games will set us the tone for the rest of the season," Walters concluded.
