Bordeaux winger Kalu ruled out until 2021 with injury

Bordeaux manager Jean-Louis Gasset has confirmed Samuel Kalu will miss their last four games in 2020 due to an injury.

The Super Eagles attacker was training to return to action last week when he suffered another setback on the quadriceps of his right thigh.

He has been battling with muscle strain since he limped off in Nigeria’s 1-0 loss to Algeria in October.

A few weeks after the international break, Kalu made a return to the Girondins’ first-team in their 1-0 victory over Rennes but was forced off when he suffered a relapse just before the hour-mark.

Ahead of Sunday’s Ligue 1 trip to Lille, Gasset disclosed the 23-year-old Nigerian and Laurent Koscielny who is battling the same injury, will not be available for selection until after the winter break.

The break in the French top-flight starts from December 23 until January 5.

"They had an MRI. I was very optimistic but unfortunately, I must have been disillusioned,” Gasset was quoted by Girondins 33.

“The examination revealed a lesion for both. They are minimal lesions but which require a fortnight's rest. They will not play again. By the winter break, we will see them again in 2021.”

Despite his struggle with injuries in this campaign, the Aba-born attacker has scored two goals in seven Ligue 1 appearances.

Kalu is currently in his third season in France after joining the Girondins on a five-year deal from Belgian club Gent in 2018.

In Kalu's absence, Nigeria's Josh Maja will be expected to boost Bordeaux's frontline as they sit 10th in the league table with 19 points from 13 outings.
