Portugal v USA Betting: Hosts to record routine win over young American side

The visitors have turned to youth after failing to qualify for the World Cup and they could be in for a tough time against the Euro 2016 champions

With nine players under the age of 22, it is an extremely youthful USA squad that travels to Europe to face continental champions Portugal.

The Americans' disastrous failure to finish in the top four of CONCACAF's seemingly straight-forward hexagonal qualifying tournament means they have no World Cup to look forward to, and instead they are preparing for a period of considerable transition.

Portugal, for their part, have been undergoing a different kind of transition, with Fernando Santos' side emerging from the shadows of unfulfilled potential to flourish into a team with some truly exciting players.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be missing for the clash with the USA, yet the likes of Andres Silva and Goncalo Guedes have shown that the winners of Euro 2016 have plenty of attacking flair even without their captain.

Attacking flair, meanwhile, could be something the visitors lack with Christian Pulisic missing, and the USA are big outsiders to record a win offered at 7/1 (8.00) by dabblebet; the hosts can be backed at 4/11 (1.44) with the draw offered at 7/2 (4.50).

Portugal's recent record in friendlies is strong, with six wins from their last eight non-competitive games, although the calibre of opponent has also been relatively low and while there was an impressive friendly win over Belgium last year, victories over the likes of Norway, Estonia, Gibraltar, Cyprus and Saudi Arabia are less eye-catching.

The USA have played a lot of football in 2017 with Tuesday's game being their 19th match in the calendar, and while on paper their record of ten wins, six draws and two defeats looks strong, in reality given the standard of opposition it has been disappointing.

Just four clean sheets in their last 12 matches is perhaps a more telling statistic, with the likes of Martinique, Honduras, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago all finding the back of the net against a leaky US defence, and as the Portuguese have netted in 16 of their last 17 games then perhaps a smart way to investing in them to win is to do so with a -1 handicap at 19/20 (1.95).

This bet paid out in eight of Portugal's ten World Cup qualifiers as well as in five of their last seven friendlies, and the European champions should be able to show their superiority against an inexperienced and experimental American side.
