Betting: England backers are paid out despite Netherlands defeat

England suffered another semi-final defeat as the Three Lions lost their Nations League clash against Netherlands in Guimaraes.

While Matthijs de Ligt's equaliser would usually have denied England backers a return, William Hill's Golden Goal promotion had already guaranteed a cash pay-out for those who had backed the favourites before kick-off.

Marcus Rashford put England ahead from the penalty spot after 32 minutes and that ensured anyone who had bet on Gareth Southgate's men was onto a winner, regardless of the final result.

As it happened, that concession proved extremely valuable thanks to de Ligt's equaliser which took the game into extra-time, rewarding draw backers in the match result market.

Jesse Lingard looked to have put Southgate's side back in front but saw his strike ruled out after a VAR review ruled the 26-year-old had strayed offside prior to slotting the ball past Jasper Cillessen.

Ronald Koeman's side dominated the additional 30 minutes in Guimaraes, hitting the front thanks to a Kyle Walker own goal before Quincy Promes sealed their progression to the Nations League final.

England are 21/20 (2.05) favourites to get the better of Switzerland in the third-place play-off which takes place earlier in the day. The Swiss are 5/2 (3.50) to come out on top with the draw trading at the same price.
