Berisha backed to make A-League return

After seven years of playing in the A-League, Besart Berisha became an Australian citizen last week and it's cast fresh speculation he could be returning to a competition he's won four times.

The 33-year-old is currently contracted to J-League side Sanfrecce Hiroshima but hasn't played a single minute in 2019 which likely made his return Down Under last week for a citizenship ceremony possible.

Berisha has, in fact, started just one game for Sanfrecce since joining them last year and has been restricted to 170 minutes of football across all competitions with his name also missing from their Asian Champions League squad.

That lack of action plus his new Australian citizenship makes him a prime candidate to return to the A-League with former Melbourne Victory teammate Archie Thompson welcoming the prospect.

"He’s obviously not getting any game time being over here in Australia," Thompson said on Fox Sports' Sunday Shootout

"It’d be great to see him back.

"I mean he doesn’t take up a foreign spot now so if he does decide to come to Australia he’s not taking up any places."

Former Adelaide United coach John Kosmina was also on the panel with Thompson and hinted he wouldn't be surprised to see new A-League club Western United make a move for the striker.

Berisha is contracted at Hiroshima until the end of 2019 but it's hard to see such a competitive figure staying put if he doesn't secure more match minutes soon.

Axed Central Coast Mariners coach Mike Mulvey revealed earlier in the season he did try to lure Berisha to Gosford but was unable to convince him.

But perhaps if Western United come calling, or indeed one of his former clubs, Berisha may struggle not to answer the call.
