Benni McCarthy: Why I have thrived at Cape Town City

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has revealed the secret behind why he is thriving at the Mother City-based club.

Despite being a novice in the coaching realm, the 40-year-old has masterminded two MTN8 final appearances in consecutive years, and McCarthy has explained that his success at the club has partly been down to the pleasant working environment at the club.

“It’s about knowing where you fit in,” McCarthy was quoted as saying by IOL.

“When I came here, I knew I was coming to a club with ambition; I knew they wanted to achieve. And they were willing to take a risk with me as someone who had never coached before; they had faith in me,” he added.

McCarthy may have enjoyed a highly successful playing career, but he certainly hasn’t rested on his laurels and his fame as he has acquired a Uefa Pro Licence, which according to the former Uefa Champions League winner, the knowledge he has gained has made his transition from professional footballer to coach a little easier.

“From my side, I was able to educate myself and I was able to learn more about the job that I wanted to pursue after my playing career,” he said.

“I can assure you that the knowledge I gained has helped me a lot in many situations during my time at City,” McCarthy revealed.

“But the important thing is that the environment I am in here at City is good. Unlike other clubs, I don’t have a chairman who is on my back all the time. I am not in a position where the coach is under pressure 24/7,” McCarthy expressed.

Meanwhile, McCarthy will now look to continue his stellar progress as City coach as they host Kaizer Chiefs at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.
