Aubameyang preserves faultless finishing record to top Premier League goal chart

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang’s nerveless penalty in Arsenal’s north London derby date with Tottenham saw him stretch a remarkable run of faultless finishing.

The Gabonese frontman was acquired by the Gunners in January to provide added firepower in the final third.

He has not disappointed, with his end product more than justifying a £56 million price tag.

Aubameyang hit 10 goals in 14 appearances last term and has already passed that mark in 2018-19.

His latest efforts came in a crunch clash with Spurs at Emirates Stadium, and saw him offer Unai Emery’s side the perfect start inside 10 minutes.

With Jan Vertonghen having handled inside the box, Aubameyang was presented with an opportunity to step up from the spot.

He coolly converted, taking his Premier League haul for the season to nine – the best return in the division.

That tally was increased later in the game and has been achieved with a 100 per cent strike rate over recent weeks, with every effort he troubles the target with finding the back of the net.

Aubameyang’s value to the Arsenal cause is obvious, with a proven frontman ensuring that they are always a threat in the final third.

They also have somebody with the composure and confidence to thrive on the big occasion.

He could have been forgiven for feeling a little nervous as he stepped up to drill home his penalty against Spurs, but he showed no sign of tension.

Beating Hugo Lloris from 12 yards also allowed the 29-year-old to preserve the Gunners’ faultless spot-kick record in Premier League competition against their fiercest rivals.

While Aubameyang handed Arsenal a dream opening against Spurs, his effort was cancelled out on the half-hour mark by Eric Dier.

Tottenham then turned the tie on its head four minutes after drawing level, with Rob Holding's rash challenge on Heung Min Son allowing Harry Kane to fire home a penalty of his own.

The Gunners' leading man was to restore parity, though, in the second half with another smart finish that saw him sweep past Lloris from the edge of the box.

Alexandre Lacazette and Lucas Torreira then got in on the act to wrap up the points for the hosts.
